The Glass Museum pays hommage to the region’s unique and significant role in the history of glass-making and the glass industry. The first glass factory in Gehlberg was established in 1645, and marked the beginning of an era where the industry became the primary source of income for the majority of the local populationThe Glass Museum is therefore deeply rooted in the community’s identity and holds a place of great importance to the people and the region.

Established in 1994 on the site of the historic glassworks, the museum also celebrates the legacy of entrepreneur Gundelach, who gained international recognition in 1896 by being the first to produce X-ray tubes shortly after the discovery of X-rays.

In recent years, the Glass Museum Gehlberg has dedicated substantial effort to enhancing and modernising the museum and creating new thematic areas and exhibits.

Improved accessibility, safety and sustainability

The donation to Glass Museum Gehlberg will primarily be invested in a new, more environmentally friendly heating system and making the museum accessible to all. Planned improvements  also include the installation of a solar heat pump heating system, an elevator, accessible sanitary facilities, and more

We are immensely proud and delighted to have found a strong partner in the Villum Foundation for the further modernisation of the historic museum building, dating back to 1709. It not only helps preserve our historical legacy but also allows us to enhance the visitor experience, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone. We are excited to start these improvements and look forward to welcoming more visitors to explore our rich cultural heritage,” Martina Schulz, chairperson of the Association of the Gehlberg Glass Tradition.

The renovation will begin in August and is expected to be completed by mid-2025. The museum will remain open during the renovations.
