Villum Experiment Outcome Study

Villum Foundation invites research applications for a study of the outcome of the Villum Experiment grant programme

As a major Danish funder of technical and natural science research carried out at Danish research institutions, Villum Foundation has a strong wish to keep improving its grant making processes and explore novel approaches to research assessment.

The Villum Experiment programme, offered annually since 2017, targets unorthodox research ideas in their early phase. The proposals are evaluated anonymously to ensure a focus on the research idea only. The latest call may be consulted here.

For the past five years the Danish Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy has conducted an initial study on the outcome of the Experiment programme, exploring issues such as gender differences, writing styles and the use of the reviewers’ ‘golden tickets’ (see list of published papers below). As citation data accumulate it becomes possible to explore more wide-ranging questions, including whether the outcome and impact (appropriately defined) from the Villum Experiment projects funded so far differ from those of more conventional grant schemes.

Villum Foundation invites applications for ambitious and innovative studies of the outcome of the Villum Experiment programme, going beyond the initial study and preferably building on its results. The foundation will provide successful applicants with a unique data set including granted and rejected proposals submitted to the programme between 2017 and 2025.

Applications may be made for financial support of up to 5 MDKK, including indirect costs (cf. below). Projects may last up to four years. The foundation expects to be able to fund up to two projects.

For the assessment, we will be trialling distributed peer review in combination with a committee evaluation. Distributed peer review is a review process in which applicants are asked to act as reviewers for the call. This approach has been used by a number of funders in recent years, and in the present call Villum Foundation wishes to gain experience with this mode of reviewing.
