Theoretical Research in Human-Computer Interaction
Project description
The field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) aims to make computer systems useful and usable for end users. Despite 40 years of methods development to involve users in design and evaluation, many systems remain frustrating and inefficient. This happens because HCI lacks robust theories to predict system usefulness and usability. To address this, I propose establishing a research center dedicated to developing and applying HCI theory. We will focus on understanding key problems like the mutual influence of computers and humans in interaction and defining what makes systems valuable to users. By using systematic theory development and application approaches, we aim to transform HCI from a craft based on methods to one grounded in theoretical insights. This shift will enhance the design of emerging technologies and make theory use as accessible as method use, greatly benefiting users globally.
