Villum Kann Rasmussen, the founder of Villum Foundation, wished to support technical and scientific research with the Annual Award. The award allows the recipient to pursue creative scientific work for the benefit and inspiration of Danish research.
In his own career, Villum Kann Rasmussen demonstrated significant creativity and entrepreneurship, notably in the construction of the VELUX skylight and by obtaining more than 55 patents.
Since its establishment in 1987, a total of 43 researchers have received the Annual Award. The grant is for DKK 5 million and cannot be applied for. The Annual Award is presented annually on the birthday of Villum Kann Rasmussen, 23 January.
The recipient of the annual award is chosen by the board of Villum Foundation, based on a recommendation from an expert committee and supported by independent peer reviews by international external experts.
The Annual Award cannot be applied for. It is awarded by the board of Villum Foundation based on a recommendation from the Annual Award Committee consisting of internationally recognized researchers.
Villum Foundation’s grantees in the field of technical and natural sciences are invited every year to contribute suggestions for qualified candidates for the award. Heads of departments, deans and rectors at Danish universities may also nominate candidates.
