’Hammershøi and his world - The Danish Painter of Light’
From 15 March to 22 July 2019, the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris focuses on the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi with a special exhibition.
The exhibition will among other things focus on the Danish artist's unique reproduction and interpretation of light, his inspiration, the interaction with other artists and his long-term stays in Paris. The exhibition is funded by the VILLUM FONDEN.
An artist of international caliberIn recent years there has been great international interest in Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916), and the exhibition in Paris follows other large Hammershøi exhibitions around the world - among others in New York, Munich, Tokyo and London. In addition to the artist's special ability to convey silence and light, Musée Jacquemart-André will focus on Hammershøi's closest family, especially his wife Ida and his brother Sven. Both family members played a significant but slightly overlooked role in his artistic development.
The exhibition will include more than 50 paintings on loan from national and international museums - from Tate Britain in London, the National Museum in Stockholm and the Musee de Orsay in Paris. Furthermore, the exhibition will present paintings from prestigious private collections and from Danish museums such as the National Gallery of Denmark, Aros, the Hirschsprung Collection and Ribe Kunstmuseum.
