Project description

The objective of FOCUSED is to derive energy-efficient optical communication systems designs guided by thermodynamic principles for the energy-cost of communications, and to investigate novel physical components that will support such systems. FOCUSED will develop a model for optical communication systems, in order to set up a new paradigm for optimisation of such systems, based on the fundamental energy-efficiency, i.e. design for minimum energy needed to support the whole system in order to transmit data. FOCUSED will use the theoretical framework for designing specific energy-efficient hardware implementations and investigate capacity scaling-strategies. Achievement of this will create a paradigm shift in systems design and advance state-of-the-art for high-capacity optical communication systems, and potentially influence the design of future low-energy communication networks for enablement of the green transition.
