Copenhagen Light Festival brightens the city’s winter darkness

More than 45 artistic light installations will illuminate the city from Friday, 30 January 2026, and over the following three weeks. Powerful beams cut through the sky and can be seen across the city and over its rooftops, while luminous projections cast images on iconic buildings such as Maersk’s large white façade by the waterfront, the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters opposite The Glyptotek and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Eigtveds Pakhus.

Reflecting Contemporary Questions
Chair of the Copenhagen Light Festival, Jesper Kongshaug, says:

“The Light Festival does not have a single overarching theme; instead, it curates ideas from all parts of the world. The absence of a fixed theme enables the works to mirror contemporary and current issues – and it is precisely for this reason that the festival achieves relevance, inspiration and international appeal, which is something the foundations in particular, support directly.”

Free and Open to All
The Light Festival is free and for everyone. In addition to experiencing the individual illuminated artworks, visitors can take part in light runs, join guided walks and boat tours through the city, and go on a light-themed treasure hunt. The area along Havnegade is especially family-friendly, featuring interactive light works, social light events and stalls offering hot drinks.
