It sizzles and bubbles again

HRH Crown Prince Frederik officially inaugurated the new Experimentarium on 25 January 2017 on the familiar address of Tuborg Havnevej 7 in Hellerup.

The new Experimentarium is a tribute to curiosity and opens with an exhibition area that has been doubled with respect to the size of the original Experimentarium. 16 challenging interactive exhibition universes will among other things give the visitor the possibility to use a robotic arm and to explore the body and the sea.

VILLUM FONDEN is one of several foundations that have enabled the construction and design of the new Experimentarium.

The Danish architects CEBRA architecture have designed the new Experimentarium. The design is  strongly inspired by science and technology, that is symbolised by the spiralling copper stairway at the entrance, recalling the twisting double helix structure of DNA.

CEBRA has recycled masonry and the base of Tuborg's former bottling facilities, which also provided the setting for the first Experimentarium. CERBA added a superstructure in the form of stacked boxes with a facade made partly of recycled beer and aluminum cans and large windows.

Facts

• Experimentarium is a private non-profit foundation
• The new Experimentarium has a total area of ​​26,850 m2 (construction: 25,000 m2, roof: 1.850 m2). The audience area is a total of 11,500 m2. The exhibition area is doubled to 9.000 m2 with respect to the size of the first Experimentarium.
• The construction of the new Experimentarium has overall been an investment of around DKK 880 million incl. the acquisition of Tuborg´s bottling halls and related plots (acquired in 2008). Grants of DKK 578 million from foundations and companies have been donated for the projest. An additional DKK 218 million were donated for the development of exhibitions and activities. The final accounts is not yet completed.
• The reconstruction of the Experimentarium has taken 3 years and included the establishment of the temporary exhibition “Experimentarium City” at Copenhagen Harbour (which closed in May 2016).
• Since the opening in January 1991, more than 8.2 million visitors have enjoyed the exhibitions and participated in the different activities. Experimentarium attracts approx. 500,000 visitors annually.
