Projektbeskrivelse

Quorum sensing is a mechanism of communication between bacteria used to coordinate synchronized cooperative behavior at a population level. Cooperative behavior could be production of “public goods” that benefit the entire population, regardless of the contribution of the single cells. Here, we hypothesize that the competition between cooperators and cheaters may not always result in community extinction but may foster alternative co-existing strategies through interactions yet uncovered. Utilizing experimental microbiology and mathematical modeling, we aim at redefining our simplistic understanding of the “live fast, die young” comprehension of social cheaters. Our findings may significantly advance understanding of bacterial behavior and evolution theory.
