The Annual Award – a significant, individual research prize

The Villum Kann Rasmussen Annual Award for Technical and Scientific Research is worth DKK 5 million and is a significant individual prize in Danish research. In his own work, graduate engineer Villum Kann Rasmussen (1909-93) demonstrated great creativity and enterprise, designing the VELUX roof window and registering more than 55 patents produced via inventiveness and experimental research.

The Annual Award is presented every year on his birthday, 23 January (although on 22 January in 2016), in recognition of outstanding achievements in research. A recipient of the Annual Award must have made an international mark with research of extremely high quality.

Villum Kann Rasmussen wanted the Annual Award to support technical and scientific research and provide better opportunities for creative scientific work to benefit and inspire Danish research. The recipient of the Annual Award is chosen by the Board of VILLUM FONDEN following a recommendation by an expert committee. A total of 33 researchers have received the Annual Award since it was created in 1987.

Celebrating Daylight and fresh air

The VKR Group celebrates the idea of bringing daylight and fresh air into people’s lives. Through 75 years of innovation and dedicated work, we have refined this idea. Today we offer a wide range of products and solutions that contribute to quality of life - for people living and working in buildings and for kids’ learning in schools.

In 1941, Villum Kann Rasmussen came up with the brilliant idea to transform dark attics into liveable spaces with daylight and fresh air. What began as a school renovation project in Denmark has grown into an international group of companies in more than 40 countries. In 2016, we celebrate the 75-year journey of this remarkable idea, on which we have founded our company and business – and foundations.

Celebrating 75 years of daylight and fresh air, we will pay tribute to our heritage and history as well as look to the future. We will share the stories and ideas of proud and dedicated individuals working each day to bring daylight and fresh air into people’s lives – an idea more important than ever.
