VILLUM FONDEN will become co-owner of CPH Village, which develops, builds and rents out small sustainable student apartments in central Copenhagen at a student-friendly rent.

Buildings account for approx. 40% of the world's CO2 emissions, so we need new thinking, and CPH Village has provided this under the motto "Live simply together". CPH Village was established in 2014 to address the great shortage of centrally located, sustainable student housing at a student-friendly rent. In 2017, Village 1 on Refshaleøen was inhabited by 168 students, and now 184 students are settling down in their new homes in Village 2 in Vesterbro. In the next few years, CPH Village will establish additional villages in central locations in Copenhagen.

A life cycle analysis shows that the student apartments reduce more than half the CO2 emissions compared to construction and conventional student apartments. In addition, CPH Village offers students several services that further minimise their environmental footprint, e.g. rental of furniture and shared cars. CPH Village has a strong focus on the students' well-being and community feeling, and the students regularly give feedback on how happy they are to live in their village.

The investment of DKK 28 million is part of VILLUM FONDEN's programme for mission-related investments aiming at investments in green start-ups and projects while respecting the founder of VELUX Villum Kann Rasmussen's motto "An experiment is better than 1,000 expert assumptions.”

Anders Kristoffersen, head of VILLUM FONDEN's impact investments, is looking forward to the collaboration: “In just a few years, CPH Village has managed to turn a very good idea into very concrete action, and we are pleased to be able to participate in the future development of the company for the benefit of the students in Copenhagen and the green transition.”
