VILLUM FONDEN – together with Carlsberg Foundation and Novo Nordisk Foundation – are supporting the scholarship programme Scholars at Risk Ukraine (SARU). The programme is aimed at Ukrainian researchers affected by the war.

More info

A SARU Fellowship can be applied for by displaced active researchers affiliated with a research institution in Ukraine, or by the member institutions of SAR Denmark, by sending an application to the Danish SAR administration. All universities in Denmark, the Danish Institute for Human Rights, the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) and the National Union of Students in Denmark are members of SAR.

The application deadline for SARU scholarships is 30 September 2022. See the call.

As a result of the war, many Ukrainian scientists have been forced to leave their universities and abandon their research. A new collaboration between Universities Denmark and the three foundations is now offering support to Ukrainian researchers.

The initiative will provide researchers the opportunity to apply for employment in Denmark in a Fellowship programme, where they will be affiliated with a Danish university for a period of twelve months. They will receive a salary and be able to continue their academic work during the period, and will be included in the university’s activities. The programme can also support researchers at Ukrainian universities who wish to undertake distance learning and other similar activities.

3 x DKK 5 million

VILLUM FONDEN, Carlsberg Foundation and Novo Nordisk Foundation have each granted DKK 5 million to the SARU programme via Universities Denmark, a partnership organisation for Danish universities. The scholarship programme is being administered by the international network Scholars at Risk (SAR), who work to protect researchers and promote academic freedom.
