With its ‘Senior citizens with impaired vision’ initiative, which marks the 40th anniversary of VELUX FONDEN, the foundation wishes to make a difference to older people over the age of 55 whose impaired vision has an impact on their everyday life. The aim is to strengthen the resources of senior citizens themselves and to help ensure them the help they need in time so that they can continue to live as active and participatory citizens with a high quality of life in their old age in spite of their loss of sight.

The starting point of the initiative is the ‘Senior citizens with impaired vision’ report prepared by The Danish Center for Social Science Research (VIVE). The report examines the implications of living with impaired vision for senior citizens who are not yet severely visually impaired or blind, and what can be done to improve living conditions of this group. A total of 1,000 telephone interviews and 39 in-depth interviews have been conducted to look at the experiences of senior citizens living with impaired vision.

On the day, researchers Anna Amilon and Maria Røgeskov from VIVE will present the findings of the report and present an inspiration catalogue that provides specific examples of how the barriers created by age-related eye disease in everyday life can be broken down. Vibeke Lybecker, head of programme of VELUX FONDEN’s Social Initiatives funding area in Denmark, will then present the initiative, while Lise Bonnevie, head of programme of VELUX FONDEN’s Eye and Ageing Research area, will talk about future notices and activities within the initiative.
