In depth: 24 foundations to discuss oceans and sustainability

The UN International Oceanographic Commission and VELUX FONDEN are bringing together leading maritime foundations in Copenhagen 27-28 February. The aim is to foster alliance-building and discuss how to improve our maritime environment.

The UN has made 2021-2030 its Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) will be responsible for organising activities to draw our attention to the importance of sharing information and data in order to make the public aware of the crucial role the oceans play in driving the climate.

Ocean Decade

‘Life below water’ is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals identified in the UN’s Agenda 2030.

The UN made 2021-2030 a decade of ocean science in order to highlight our dependence on maritime resources. Read more about the Ocean Decade.

IOC-UNESCO and VELUX FONDEN will co-host the Foundations for Dialogue for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development at the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in Copenhagen on 27-28 February 2020.

VELUX FONDEN has entered into a partnership with IOC-UNESCO in recognition of the importance of maritime science and sustainable development – both of which complement our efforts to improve the maritime environment in Denmark.

“VELUX FONDEN wants to contribute to a sustainable balance between the use and the conservation of our maritime resources. A healthy ocean is part of the answer to addressing climate change, feeding a growing population and developing clean energy sources. The UN’s Ocean Decade is a unique opportunity give momentum to efforts to improve the maritime environment. We are proud to be partnering with IOC-UNESCO and to be fostering a dialogue amongst other foundations about this crucial agenda,” says Hans Kann Rasmussen, chair of VILLUM FONDEN.

On 27-28 February, IOC-UNESCO and VELUX FONDEN will bring together in Copenhagen 24 foundations involved in issues related to the maritime environment to take part in the Foundations for Dialogue for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The goal of the conference is for the participating foundations to build the partnerships that will be necessary for driving the activities that will improve the maritime environment in the coming decade.
